D.N. Sherard was born on March 25, 1923.
He entered the United States Army Air Corp in 1943 and was assigned to the 464th bomb group, 5th Wing, 15th Air Force as a bombardier/navigator on a B-24. His military service ended in 1945. After the war, this Wyoming native decided to attend the University of Wyoming law school. He was admitted to the practice of law in Wyoming on September 6, 1949.
D.N. set up his legal practice in Wheatland, Wyoming and spent his entire career representing clients in the area. He conducted a general practice which included contract, property, corporate, probate and tort law. Along the way he also defended and prosecuted clients in the criminal law arena. He represented some clients for many years:
47 years – Wheatland REA
24 years – Town of Wheatland, LaGrange and Ft. Laramie
25 years – Basin Electric Power Cooperative
22 years – Western Fuels Association, Inc.
While practicing law, D.N. also served the community:
8 years – Wyoming Legislature
4 years – Platte County Attorney
6 years – Wyoming Board of Pardon and Parole
In 1980, son Stephen N. Sherard and family friend Rex E. Johnson joined D.N.’s practice creating the law firm of Sherard Sherard & Johnson. In 2004 grandson Cole N. Sherard joined the firm.
In 2000, D.N. was the recipient of the UW Law Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award. When D.N. received this honor, the Honorable Judge James E. Barrett stated “Don has distinguished himself as an able trial attorney, a premier lawyer, and a devoted patriot. His roots are deep in Wyoming. He is completely honest, trustworthy, loyal and moral. He is indeed a distinguished alum.”
